1968 AMX History
The 1968 AMC AMX (American Motors EXperimental) was debuted in late February, 1968, just five months following the Javelin's launch. Wanting their share of the Muscle-Car craze, American Motors Corporation made available to the public this very unique and only true American all steel-body 2-seater automobile.
The 1968 AMX body style was basically a shorter version of the Javelin, thus being responsible for its light weight of just over 3,000 pounds, and when joined with the optional 390 cid motor pushing 315 bhp, the AMX became a true force to contend with. On the quarter mile it crossed the finish line in a very acceptable 15.2 seconds, and reached 0-60 in 6.9 seconds.
Some of 1968 AMC AMX standard equipment included:
Heavy-duty suspension
Woodgrain interior trim
Bucket seats
Floor carpeting
Four-speed manual transmission
Racing stripes
Chrome plated sill covers
