1966 Mustang History

There are no major changes to the 1966 Ford Mustang. Minor cosmetic variations such as a chrome lip molding on the hood, back up lights and rocker panel moldings become standard items.

A five gauge instrument panel is added. The grille is remodeled and now shows horizontal chrome edged inserts. The Mustang emblem insert on the fuel cap is removed, and the seat covers receive a nice "woven" design.

On March 2nd 1966, the 1,000,000th Mustang is produced. Not bad considering its launching only 18 months earlier.

The Mustang Shelby GT350 returns to the line-up for '66, and is still being built in Dearborn, Michigan, then shipped to Shelby American in Los Angeles for installation of the modifications. It is available as a coupe, fastback and convertible body styles. The 306 hp, 289 cid Cobra engine remains practically unchanged. An automatic transmission is offered as an option for the first time.

Some of the 1966 Shelby's most noticeable changes from the previous year include functional air scoops and plexiglas windows on the quarter panels and the Cobra GT logo is placed on the gas cap.

Production for the Shelby GT350 amounted to a grand total of 2,378 units. Out of that number there were 1,001 - GT350H built to fill an acquired sales order to the Hertz Rental Company. These cars went to their Hertz Sport Car Club members as rental units.
