1967 Mustang History
Hello Big-Block. The 1967 Ford Mustang is the first to step out and show some real muscle. The body dimensions grow both in length and height thus allowing the new 390 cid - 320 bhp big block to find itself a new nest.
Even though the newly redesigned body's length increases by two inches, the overall wheelbase stays the same at 108 inches.
Notable changes for the year include an extended roofline on the Fastback model. Optional power disc brakes, an overhead console and a tilt-away steering wheel are also offered. On the 1967 Mustang convertible, the rear plastic window is now replaced with two separate glass panels.
The Mustang GT package is offered as optional equipment and displays side stripes, a dual exhaust system, driving lamps and a special-order hood panel featuring dual recesses.
1967 is also the year that the optional "FMX" fully automatic tranny is first introduced.
The 1967 Mustang Shelby launches a new year with very distinctive body modifications, giving it a bolder and faster appearance. Fiberglass is used to fabricate such panels as the trunk lid, hood and a redesigned front nose section.
Some of the new changes include:
Two large 7 inch high-beam lamps positioned close together and mounted in the new and revised grille
Upper and lower rear quarter panel scoops - only the lower ones are functional
A rear trunk lid spoiler
Two-point roll bar; some of the earlier models came with a four-point
The existing Mustang Shelby GT350 is once again powered with the 289 cid engine pushing 271 bhp, even though it is rated at 306 bhp. This 289 cid performance engine has a 715 cfm Holley carburator mounted on top of a high rise aluminum intake. For added performance there is an optional Paxton supercharger available.
A new model is introduced to the lineup - the Shelby GT500, being practically the same as the GT350, except that it comes standard with a modified 428 cid engine, rated at 355 bhp and is equipped with a pair of 600 cfm Holley carbs mounted on an aluminum intake and topped off with an attractive looking cobra air cleaner. A set of exhaust headers were offered as an option.
Production numbers for the Mustang Shelby GT350 stands at 1,175 and 2,048 for the Shelby GT500.
