1972 Camaro History

The muscle car era is coming to an end and even the 1972 Camaro can't escape the inevitable. The price of gas keeps going up, insurance premiums are on the rise and emissions regulations keep getting tighter. The 1972 "SS" model will cease to exist at the end of this year, alongside the big-block engine.

Some noticeable changes:

Speedometer's reading drops to 130 mph from 150 mph

Shoulder harness is improved to a 3-point

Hurst shifter is no longer used

Grille is changed and now shows a wider spacing mesh

Inside door panels are restyled

Horsepower and Torque specs are shown as NET ratings only

1972 Camaro SS (Super Sport, RPO Z27)

Base engine is the L48, 350 cid 200 net bhp

Optional engine is the LS3, 402 cid 240 net bhp

Heavy duty suspension, front and rear stabilizer bars, special shocks

Production: 6,562

1972 Camaro RS (Rally Sport, RPO Z22)

No body style changes from last year

Production: 11,364

1972 Camaro Z28 (RPO, Z28)

Engine's horse-power drops to 255 net

Rear stabilizer bar and rear shock valving are altered

Wheels are painted semi-gloss gray and blue bow-ties are placed on the center caps

Fast-ratio manual power steering is now optional equipment from standard

Chrome exhaust tail tips are no longer available
