1965 Chevelle SS History
1965 Chevelle SS History
Only one year after its introduction, the 1965 Chevelle SS comes out looking slightly longer (2.7" to be exact) due to a redesigned front nose section and front bumper. Models available consist of the 300, 300 Deluxe, Malibu, and Malibu SS.
The 1965 Malibu SS looks pretty well the same as last year's model, except for some minor appearance changes such as the blacking out of the front grille, headlight bezels and the rear cove, also the wheels are adorned with special SS covers. The Malibu SS name plate on the rear cove receives some changes in looks and positioning.
The interior of the Super Sport model has bucket seats, floor console if ordered with a 4-speed or powerglide transmission and a full set of instrument gauges, with the tachometer still being offered as an option.
The 1965 Chevelle SS is mated for the first time to a big-block 396 cid engine half way through the production year to the delight of many fans. The Z16 package - 396 cid/375 bhp would be made on a special low run of 200 units, I'm sure as a teaser of better and bigger things to come for next year's production.
It is possible that there may be one Z16 convertible out there bringing the total figure to 201 (200 were hardtops), but as far as I know there has not been solid proof of its existence as yet.
