1966 Chevelle SS History

The 1966 Chevelle SS comes out mean and ready to go against anything that crosses its path. Both the 283 and 327 cid engines are dropped and now the base engine is a 396 cid / 325 bhp, and if that's not enough to satisfy your need for speed, you may choose between two other 396's, one with 360 horsepower, and the almighty L78 - pushing 370 horsepower. Where did those fun days disappear to?

To compliment the extra power under the hood, it comes standard with a beefed-up suspension, including heavy duty shocks and springs, frame stiffeners, a stronger stabilizer bar and to make the experience more fun, a floor-mounted shifter.

There were some noticeable changes to the 1966 Chevelle SS looks. The front bumper and grille have a cleaner broader look, the side windows are now curved and the roof line has a smoother slanted appearance. It also looks meaner than its counterpart due to the blacked-out grille, special hood adorned with an air-scoop, SS emblems everywhere, red striped wider tires and a vinyl roof. Looks great!

The interior also receives some improvements and now offers more convenience features and comfort, such as a padded dash panel and sun visors, two-speed wipers with washers. For safety issues the rearview mirror's glass is now shatter-resistant and both the SS 396 and Malibu convertible models are dressed with an all-vinyl interior.
